Minor Project Submission Post

Through a series of iterations of my previs, I was able to create a story line that I personally really like. Though there are some changes that need to happen before this can be a good animation, I feel it conveys just what I want in terms of humor and animation.

This version of the previs is to show the updated shots that I've added into the animation. Currently there is a placeholder advert at the very beginning which is supposed to be about Robot Butlers, however I don't have the ability to record that yet. After the TV is initially turned off we're supposed to hear the homeowner getting ready to go out but I have yet to include that too.

Near the end, once the homeowner gets back home, after it cuts to black I need to change it to fade up into the next shot. So the changes that need to happen are;
  1. Robot advert needs to replace the placeholder sound.
  2. I need to replace the floaty transition with a POV of the owner as she gets ready.
  3. Removal of the TV remote throw.
  4. Inter cut between the TV and the Robot as adverts play and the Robot drinks beer.
  5. Make it clear that the Hoover advert arrests the Robot's Attention.
  6. Show the Robot roll over to the Hoover box.
  7. Build more of a relationship between the Robot and the Hoover showing that the Robot REALLY cares.
  8. Improve camera moves in the dance scene.
Once I get into Animating this with the actual models and set I believe that I can make these changes with relative ease.

Here's the ROB-O-Matic and the Deluxe Hoover Cleaner, arm in arm, in their Turnaround. I really like how they've turned out.

This is essentially a Previs for the advert about the ROB-O-Matic that plays on TV as the homeowner leaves the flat.

Below is a much more refined version of the previs which depicts the actions of the Robot in the advert. The script for the advert will be as follows; "Here comes the all new Rob-o-Matic from TechTronics! The Rob-o-Matic or 'Rob' is built to make your life easy! He'll do anything from washing the dishes to cleaning the toilet! wont you little guy?" (robot nods)

"Ahh and he even brought us some champagne! Lets take a look a him... as well as being the perfect pair of helping hands, his sleek design makes him the perfect addition to your home too! Get the Rob-o-Matic today!... see in store for details, terms and conditions apply."

Rob-o-Matic: Logos

I Have created the Logo to look like the center piece of the robot itself, using the colours and font styles used in the main branding too. While creating the logo I realised that the logo also works well with a filled background as well as in badge form. I'd love to hear some feedback on these and would love to know what time period they look like they've come from. :)

Here are some Logos for the Hoover as well, i think it's very important for each character/appliance to have it's own branding.

Rob-o-Matic: Eyes

My Rob-o-Matic will convey his emotions using his eyes and here are some variations.
Love

Angry

Bored

Focus

Happy

Sad

Squint

Surprise

Neautral

Rob-o-Matic: Fully Rigged

Here's my fully rigged Rob-o-Matic, he has IK arms to give me an easier time when it comes to animating. Also, with Alan's help i was able to make the wheels move forward and backward in tandem with the robots movements around the space.

Rob-o-Matic: The Hoover - Painted

Here's the hoover model for my Rob-o-Matic animated short, I like the design but I'm not too sure on the colours yet as I feel that they resemble the robot too much at the moment. Also, the pattern on the hoover bag can be found here.

I'd love to hear any thoughts on improving my models! :)

The Rob-o-Matic

"Here comes the all new Rob-o-Matic from TechTronics!

I've been thinking about the name for my robot for a little while now and i think i've decided upon the name of Rob-o-Matic, it has a double meaning, Robo for robot and also Rob as a general name so that buyers of the product might consider him more than just a household appliance.

In the quotation marks above are the words i plan on going with the robot advert that'll be played on the TV a the beginning of my animation. The movie is to show you all the newer design of my robot in an intuitive way, getting 2 jobs done at once by showing the rough actions the Robot would perform in the advert.

Secret Life of a House Robot: Design and Colour

Here are my designs for the Robot in my animation. Design itself is up for change but I really like the way they look at the moment. My favourite colour for the robot is No. 1, I feel like it would match well with a 1970's aesthetic.

Secret Life of a House Robot: Maya Designs so Far

Hoover_Models
My favourite out of the hoover designs has to be the one in the middle, it feels like it's from the 70s with a slim and sleek design, i could also put a pretty groovy pattern on the hoover bag.

Basic Shapes for Robots

Development and smoothing giving new results

Smoothing out other models
My personal favourite is the middle robot in the image above. i feel like with a bit of refinement it could be a really nice design.

The Secret Life of a House Robot - Previs Version 3

Here's my updated Previsualisation for the animated short: 'The Secret Life of a House Robot'.

I still need to add in some sound effects, mainly the voices of the characters in my animation. The Robot doesn't speak, but the homeowner gives instructions and threats in the beginning, The TV later mentions the Hoover in the corner of the room during an advert as well.

All sound effects have been taken from the following websites and are temporary;

SoundBible - http://soundbible.com/2077-Toke-And-Exhale.html

freeSFX - http://www.freesfx.co.uk/

FindSounds - http://www.findsounds.com/ISAPI/search.dll?keywords=door+slam

On watching this back, I personally feel that it needs a better way to introduce the scene, i feel i could do this by swooping along the room slowly while an advert for house robots plays in the background.

Minor Project: Previs So Far

Here's my Previs for my upcoming animation of; The Secret Life of a House Robot. There's currently no sound and i feel that the piece would communicate better if there was sound so that's coming soon. Until then i'll let you know the key parts that are supposed to be making noise;

  • At the beginning when the door is open, the Homeowner is telling the robot that she wants dinner done by the time she comes home from work.

  • Once the robot is on the sofa, his head bounces around, this is when he's mocking the homeowners orders.

  • He presses the button on the remote to turn the TV on but we cut to black, there's supposed to be a sound of crisps opening during the black screen to lead into the next shot.

  • After the robot 'eats' the crisps, at that black screen we hear a lighter flick on to lead us into the next shot.

  • When we come back to the robot after looking at the bottles, he lets out a huge belch due to the alcohol after shaking his head around.

  • In the next shot, the robot starts off frame and we hear him making his way toward the camera, he has a bra on... the bra pops off and floats to the ground like a parachute.

  • The robot looks up because he hears an advert for a super sexy hoover... and he soon realises that the name of the hoover is on the box behind him.

The previs ends as he finds the hoover, i've still got to show the parts where he; seduces the inanimate hoover, makes out with the inanimate hoover and gets caught doing it by the homeowner. i am then going to show the hoover box rumbling around as the homeowner struggles inside and the robot & hoover live happily ever after.

The Sectet Life of a House Robot - Story

Intro

Homeowner tells the robot, HK, that she wants the house nice and clean for when she gets home. She turns the lights off and shuts the door behind her.
After a short pause HK turns the lights back on and mocks the Homeowner like a moody teenager.

Main

HK scoots over to the TV remote and picks it up. He spins backwards, chucks up the controller and catches it as he tries to land on the sofa, he misses and lands on the floor after bouncing off the sofa, he picks himself up and gets on the sofa. As he presses the button to change the channels, we cut to HK in different positions on the sofa. Including; either side of the sofa upside down, sideways, hanging off the edge and even inside a pillow fort.

(   Pause in the cutting for adverts about electronic appliances that 'turn HK on'. Various adverts about new hoovers, washing machines tumble driers, microwaves and toasters. Adverts can say things like 'unbelievably hot to give the best results', 'isn't that the best suck you've ever seen?', 'Ejection like you've never seen before!' And 'Can handle all the dirty stuff so you don't have to'...
(Hoover is going around in the background)   )

The Hoover passes by during one of these 'raunchy' advert and HK eyes it up and down in a seductive way. HK turns the TV off.

HK tries to seduce the Hoover as it goes around the room. (It seems like the hoover is running away even though it's just doing it's job)

Hoover finally stops (as it has finished it's run around the house) and HK tries to seduce the hoover by running his 'hands' up and down the hoover, checking out it's back and trying to look on the underside of the hoover. As he lifts the hoover it turns on again and runs HK over. HK looks back at the hoover as it rolls away.

Finale

HK sulks on the sofa but the hoover bumps into him on its way back.
HK turns happy, grabs the hoover and 'makes out' with it as it vibrates against him (it's trying to get past).

Cut to them both on the floor still  'making out'... the front door opens and HK stops what he's doing and pretends to be picking the hoover up. Hk puts the hoover in it's charging place.

We see the hoover nozzle is stuck up HK's 'charging hole' as he turns away from the camera.
Credits Roll and we hear the Homeowner ask HK "hey HK! what's that in your charge hole???" Followed by a shocked Robot noise.
